The United Nations Information Office has continued its educational programmes in regional Uzbekistan, intending to raise awareness among young people about the current challenges faced within the world community. This ‘UN Fridays’ series was held from the 27th to the 30th of May, in conjunction with the UN Communication Group, in Bukhara, Navoi and Samarkand.

In 2000, participating countries signed the Millennium Declaration, obliging them to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. Working towards these MDGs has helped improve the global economic, social and environmental situation, address the on-going concern of HIV/AIDS, and reduce global maternal and child mortality. UN has applied focused work to achieving these goals by the 2015 deadline.

As young people need to solve tomorrow’s problems, the United Nations Information Office has worked to make this demographic as familiarised with them as possible. During the UN Friday more than 600 students from Bukhara, the Samarkand State University and the Navoi State Pedagogical University received information from UNICEF and UNFPA representatives about MDGs and the issues to be faced post-2015.

At these events, videos regarding activities of the UN Office in Uzbekistan and global challenges faced in achieving the MDGs were presented. Both consultations with UN staff and a knowledge quiz helped create an environment for children to obtain relevant information and develop an interest in the topics being discussed.
